The Bardo Aspiration

Pointing Out the Bardos

By Longchen Rapjam

om ah hum, chok chu gyelwa ma lü gong su söl

oṃ āḥ hūṃ Victors of the ten directions, please pay heed!

dak gi tok mé dü né danté bar

Through the virtue I have gathered throughout beginningless time ‘til now,

dü sum sak dang yöpé gewa dé

through all the virtue of the three times, and through that which I now possess,

dak zhen ma lü jangchup topar shok

may I and all others, everyone without exception, reach awakening!

déma top kyi tsérap küntu yang

In every rebirth until this is attained,

lam zap dzokchen nyingpö dön tok né

may we realize the basic essence, Great Perfection’s deepest path,

chönyi ngönsum gongpel tsépep né

and so arrive at manifest dharmatā, at increase, and culmination!

zakché pungpo ö kur drölwar shok

May the defiled aggregates thus be liberated into the awakened body of light!

néchö drakpö dukngel mi jung zhing

At the time of death, may we not be tormented by suffering,

lama yidam pawo khandrö tsok

and may the host of gurus, yidams, spiritual heroes, and sky-goers

mik gi wangpor ngönsum jön né ni

appear in actuality, before our very eyes,

wang kur lung tön khachö tripar shok

grant empowerment and predictions, and guide us to the celestial realms!

düjé mi tak chiwa jung tsa na

Since everything conditioned is impermanent, our death will surely come—

gyuwa uk ché bem rik drelwé tsé

the breath will cease, and mind and body will go their separate ways.

zhen chak trülpé nangwa mi charwar

At that moment, may we not fall into the delusion of attachment and clinging,

néluk chökü ngang la né par shok

but remain in dharmakāya’s natural and continuous state!

gyu lü döché jokpé dü bap na

When the time has come to shed this body, this material illusion,

nang pung tra rak tokpa gakpé tsé

and appearances, aggregates, gross and subtle thoughts all cease,

trülmé khyapdal dömé yingchen la

may we all be liberated in the very moment that mind and body part–

bem rik drel ma taktu drölwar shok

unconfused, into vast, all-pervasive, timeless space!

ma dak jungwa sosor dengpé tsé

Then, as one into another the untrue elements dissolve,

dakpé ö nga ma dré ösel ngang

within the lucid state, unmixed and pure, of five-colored light,

tokmé ö ngé dorjé lugu gyü

without creating concepts, may the vajra chains of five-colored light

yermé chik dré chönyi tarchin shok

be undivided, unified, perfected in dharmatā’s realms!

hung chen tröpa sinpö zukchen sok

When the three-thousandfold realm is filled to the brim with huge, wrathful hūṃs

in the form of ogres and the like, as well as with the roaring sound of hūṃ,

rik tong hung dré né du ngoshé né

may we recognize the vital point—the sound of hūṃ as empty awareness—

drak tong drakcha tabur tokpar shok

and so realize that every sound is empty like an echo!

shinjé shémé tsok kyi kor tsa na

When hordes of Yama’s executioners surround us, shouting, “Attack! Slay! Give chase!”—

gyop sö drö dé trülpa ying dak né

may confusion be purified within basic space!

dré ngang trülpé nangwa mi charwar

Without being struck by the delusion of fear and terror,

yidam zhi trö ku ru tongwar shok

may we behold them as the peaceful and wrathful yidams!

dung khang barwé déchen zhelyé né

When the hordes of wrathful herukas come swarming forth

trowö tsok nam né né gyépé tsé

from the Blazing Blissful Palace in the mansion of the skull,

jik zuk sinpö ku ru mi charwar

may we not see them as the dreadful forms of demons,

men ngak nyingtik gongpé dön tok shok

but realize the intent of The Heart Essence pith instructions!

tsitta rin chen gur khang zhelyé né

When, from the Jewel Dome Palace in the heart,

zhiwé tsok nam ying su yelwé tsé

the mass of peaceful ones dissolve in basic space,

nangwa ru lok ö kur sharwé dü

and appearances are reversed and arise as bodies of light,

rikpa ö kyi long du timpar shok

may awareness then dissolve into the luminous expanse!

drin gül tsa yi khorlo drelwé tsé

When the wheel of channels at the throat becomes unfastened

jikpé gé gyang druk tong dir tsa na

with a thousand roaring thunder claps of terrifying laughter,

ah hum zhi trö dang su ngo shé né

may we recognize it as the peaceful-wrathful song of āḥ and hūṃ

rik tong kyémé dra ru drölwar shok

so that it is freed as the non-arising sound of empty awareness!

sang né dé kyong khorlö zhelyé né

When, from the Bliss Sustaining Cakra Palace in the secret place,

tap shé kar mar nying gar tré tsa na

the red and white, means and knowledge, converge at the heart,

dé tong zakpa mépé néluk dé

may there dawn the natural state of untainted empty bliss,

lung rik umé nang du tsüpar shok

and may prāna-awareness penetrate the central channel!

chönyi bar ö ngang la né pé tsé

Then, as we remain within the intermediate state of dharmatā,

shé rik lung ma ten du ma songwar

may cognition not stray into oblivion,

rang dröl kadak chen pö dön tok té

but, as we realize the vast, original purity of natural liberation,

zhen tong chö zé ngang la népar shok

may we settle into the “other-empty” state of phenomena’s exhaustion!

chönyi ngönsum denpa tongwé tsé

Upon seeing the reality of dharmatā directly,

nyenpo dren dzin gompé lo drel né

freed from the conceptual remedy of fixated mindfulness,

kadak zé sar khyölwé dön tok té

may we realize original purity, where all comes to exhaustion,

tokmé trö drel ngang la népar shok

and so remain within non-conceptuality beyond fabrication!

ja tsön na nga drépé zhelyé né

When, from the palace of five-colored, interwoven rainbows,

yéshé nga yi gur khang go ché té

the dome of fivefold wisdom opens up its doors,

ku dang tik lé zhing kham gangwé tsé

and kāyas and bindus fill the pure realms,

ku nga yé shé nga dang jelwar shok

may we encounter directly the five kāyas and five wisdoms!

tiklé tongdrön ösel zhelyé su

When, in the luminous palace that is the empty lamp bindu,

ku nga yéshé nga dang jel tsa na

we encounter the five kāyas and five wisdoms,

nyemjé nyi nang tétsom mépa ru

may we then, free from doubt, that vacillating dualistic feeling,

künzang dömé ngang du timpar shok

may we merge with Samantabhadra’s timeless state!

sem nyi drönma zhi dang ngöjel né

Having met the fourfold lamp, mind’s essence, face to face,

tiklé tongdrön ösel zhelyé su

in the luminous palace that is the empty lamp bindu,

lhündrup bup la tenpa tarchin né

may we master stability within the womb of spontaneous presence

ying rik namkhé ngang du powar shok

and shift into the vast state of space and awareness!

chöku tongsel drönmé barwar shok

May the luminous, empty lamp of dharmakāya shine forth!

tongnyi rikpé chöku topar shok

May we attain the dharmakāya of aware emptiness!

gakmé nyinang longku topar shok

May we attain the sambhogakāya of unobstructed dual appearances!

rangrik tarchin trülku topar shok

May we attain the nirmāṇakāya of perfect self-awareness!

ku sum top né zhen dön jépar shok

Having attained the triple kāya, may we work for others’ good!
