Awakening at Dawn from the Sleep of Ignorance

Guru Padma, together with his host of ḍākas and ḍākinīs, accompanied by the music of hand-drums and bells, has arrived with great splendor in the sky before me. Their bodies in dancing postures, their voices as melodies of symbolic language and mantra songs, and their hearts as the essence of self-occurring awareness are all directed towards me.

jé lama khandrö tsok nam kyi༔

Lord guru and host of ḍākinīs,

mi dak la tukjé chen gyi zik༔

gaze upon me with your compassionate eyes:༔

dü danta kham sum semchen nam༔

Now all sentient beings of the three realms are asleep,

sem lungmaten gyi ngang du nel༔

their minds in a state of indifference.

dé sé né trülpé nangwar khyam༔

When waking up, they wander through experiences of confusion.

ma dro druk gyurpé semchen la༔

So that I, your child, a yogi who realizes natural awareness,

bu rangrik tokpé neljor ngé༔

may guide all my mothers, the sentient beings of the six realms,༔

zhing khachö né su drenpé chir༔

to the pure land of celestial realms,༔

pa lama khyé kyi jé zhuk né༔

I will follow you, father guru.

lü ngak yi tangnyom mi nepar༔

Not remaining indifferent in thought, word, or deed,

dön tö sam gompé ten la pap༔

I will gain certainty by learning, contemplating, and meditating,

lé jawa tün zhi trang la chuk༔

and arrange my life around the four sessions.

né ritrö nyamgé zhing diru༔

In this delightful realm of a mountain retreat,

dak rang zhen dön nyi drupa yi༔

I will accomplish the welfare of self and others.

khyé lama khandrö tsok nam kyi༔

Guru, may you and your host of ḍākinīs,

mi dak gi go sum jin gyi lop༔

bless my body, speech, and mind.

Then exhale the stale breath three times. As the common preliminaries, arouse intense renunciation, faith, and great compassion, and thereby engender a mind of renunciation.
